The second edition of this landmark encyclopedia is finally nearing completion. With the same solid scholarship as the original, it breaks new ground in entries on such important topics as childbirth, motherhood, marriage, lesbianism, mixed race women, and many, many more. The articles are longer and go more deeply into all the topics covered, from slavery to international affairs. The biographical entries, too, represent the latest scholarship by prominent scholars in the field--Darlene Clark Hine, Nell Painter, Deborah Gray White, Wilma King, Bettina Aptheker--as well as young voices never before heard.
