Civil Rights

In Oklahoma, Clara Luper was the great civil rights organizer. This image shows her being arrested during a demonstration in 1969 in Oklahoma City.


 

 

 

The Civil Rights movement was also fought in places like Carson City, Nevada where the NAACP organized this protest in 1961.

The black organization of the era most connected with the West was the Black Panthers. Inspired by civil rights activities in Mississippi, the Black Panthers officially were founded in Oakland California in 1966. The party quickly became established in a number of cities including Los Angeles, Denver, and Chicago. This image shows Panthers Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Sullivan in Denver in 1968 with their baby.
